Taro's Story

When Taro was seventeen, his vision had already worsened to 20/200 in both eyes. What Taro had was Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a disease that would only get worse and gradually develop into complete blindness. His parents had visited all the opthamalogists they could find in Japan. Nothing could relieve their worry, until they found Dr. Li. His vision improved to 20/70 after a two-week treatment. His visual field expanded. The vision he gained might not satisfy many people. But to Taro, this let him go to regular school and lead a normal life, and that made all the difference to him. All thanks to Dr. Li's acupuncture treatment.

Ah Kit's Story

Ah Kit had Usher Syndrome. This meant double-trouble to him. He had vision of 20/200(L) and 20/400(R). His hearing was so bad, he could not hear well even with hearing-aids. Being a well-rounded TCM ophthamalogist and acupuncturist, Dr. Li decided both problems were equally urgent. After the first course, Ah Kit reported that he could now walk by himself through the dark subway he needed to go through everyday, and he could see a bigger area of his mother's face. By the end of the second course, his hearing improved so much he turned his hearing-aids from 0.5 down to 0.3. And his vision improved to 20/80(L) and 20/400(R). His family was extremely pleased. Nearly 30 years old, Ah Kit was finally allowed by his mother to go places by himself at night. He also felt less worried about bumping into people. With continued but less frequent treatments, Ah Kit managed to keep what he'd gained and now once in a while mentions steady improvement in hearing and night vision.

For Ah Kit, Dr. Li's treatment combined herbal medication RP Supp. and acupuncture. RP Supp. is an herbal medicine that Dr. Li specially formulated for RP patients after she found that RP patients often had similar health problems like weak spleen, weak kidney and poor blood circulation. For Ah Kit, another obvious gain for him was being able to fall asleep at night.

My story (a patient with retinal detachment)

I was hurt in a traffic accident at age 12. I was suffering from retinal detachment , the government doctor said. I could not imagine that this accident was a serious injury to my eyes for which I had been blinded at my right eye a year later. As seeing with one left eye, the vision was year by year getting worst and worst. I worried that persistent poor sighted might be a symptom of blindness. I had visited several famous eye doctors in Hong Kong and tried many treatments for eye diseases. However, there was nothing improved to my eyes. They honestly told me that no medical treatment or even operation could treat for my eyes. I was disappointed once again. At age 25, I was told that Qigong was good for health. I exercised myself in Qigong for 13 years till now. Fortunately, it stopped getting worst of sight of my left eye. Miracle happened in 2000! This year I, a 38 years old man, saw an advertisement from Internet ----- " Jodie Chinese Medical Eye Institute". Needless to say, I tried treatment again. Unbelievably, I soon recovered partial sight at both eyes under the first treatment course of acupuncture. Really, it is a miracle!. I has lost my vision for 25 years , I never image I can see again. So I have confidence in recovering sight under continuous treatment of acupuncture and herbs. I express my cordially appreciation to Doctor Jodie Li.

Stereopsis Recovery

There was a retinal pigmentary degeneration patient who lived in Li Island Hong Kong. She was not able to see the scenery along the ferry ride. After treatment in my clinic, his visual field enlarged by 5 degree, vision improved from 0.4 to 0.8. She was happy to see mountains in distance. But one day, she came to me complaining about her stereovision loss. ' Why the scenery I see is flat?' I explained, ' Based on my research in Japan on stereovision, you had a long term deficiency in Qi and Xue (Chinese medicine terms: Air and Blood), your brain is not functioning properly which includes stereopsis. Don't worry, acupuncture will do.' After only four acupuncture treatments, she could see the distant mountain and no longer had trouble walking down the stairs.

The effects of Acupuncture are truly unbelievable. Dr. Li developed a series of effective pressure points (Xue Wei) by using modern medical research. Only when the Chinese herbal medicine meets modern medicine, there reveals the essence of medicine.

Presently there are many eye diseases which do not have a satisfactory treatment in western medicine. For example, there are central serous retinitis, retinochoroiditis, senile macular degeneration, fundus oculi hemorrhage, central vascular embolism, diabetes retinopathy and etc. Fortunately the unique therapy provided by Chinese medicine saved many patients' vision. This research institute was given birth through the merge of high technology, advanced knowledge and Chinese traditional medicine. Our goal is to focus on the research and therapy of difficult and complicated eye diseases, mainly on retinal diseases by combining Chinese traditional medicine and modern scientific study.

Miss L's Delight

Miss L had suffered from iritis for 8 yeas. Couple of times a year, each time she resorted from steroids. She was a herbal lover. Unfortunately nothing has improved with her eyes. Each time, it lasted for about 10 days. As her symptoms reached the peak this time, she came to my clinic for care. I examined her thoroughly. Her right eye was very red and aching, afraid of light and tearing constantly. After only 4 treatments, her symptoms were gone completely. ' It never happened to me, it was a miracle.' surprised Miss L. The key of Chinese traditional medicine is to identify the symptoms then cure. The recognition of the symptoms and signs of the ailment leads to the proper treatment. For endocrine and immune diseases, herbal medicine takes time. So be patient with your doctor.

Non surgical treatment for cataract

An elderly lady, age 92, had matured cataract in both eyes complicated with senile macula lutea degeneration. She was not able to use surgery due to heart diseases and severe rheumatism. She was resistant to Chinese medicine because of her stomach illnesses. After just one period of Herbal Ionic Perforating treatment, her symptoms had greatly improved.

Recovering of Retinal Bleeding in 3 Days

Indonesian merchant Mr.W has been a Diabetic Retinopathy patient for years. One day, he woke up with some smoky blackish red mark on his left eye. His vision became very blurry. He flew to Hong Kong to our clinic two days later. During the examination, we found out that there was a massive retinal bleeding on his left eye, the vitreous turned hazy. His left eye was 0.4 (20/50), and his right eye was 1.0 (20/20). We started ion-penetration treatment right away. By the first time, his left vision was raised to 0.9 (20/25). The patient continued his treatment every other day while taking herbal medicine the same time. His vision was raised to 1.0 (20/20) three more treatments later. At that time, the eye-examination shown only a little bit of bloodstain was left at the bottom of the vitreous, but the vitreous had cleared up quite nicely. The result was satisfactory. Unlike western medicine, which may require a few months of oral drug intake to treat retinal bleeding, the TCM is fast, painless and worry-free of f side effect. With the right combination of powdered herbal medicine and ion-penetration treatment, a fast recovery can be expected in no time.

BRVO (branch retinal vein obstruction)
--Message from Mr. T living in Hachioji, Tokyo

About three years ago I had trouble with my eye and the symptoms indicated that I had dry eye.
Last year in September, I felt that the vision in my left eye was getting worse. I was worried about dry eye so I went to see an oculist. Her examination indicated eyeground hemorrhage. Based on her diagnosis I had gotten BRVO (branch retinal vein obstruction) due to high blood pressure. At that time, which was October 3, 2001, the oculist thought it was better not to treat it at once because the symptoms were off center and would result in a little inconvenience in the left side only.
From October 20 up to the middle of November the symptoms got worse and I could not read a newspaper with my left eye at all. When looking out of my left eye everything was distorted. I could only see shining objects like tail lights and head lights. When I had my eyes checked on November 26th the diagnosis was macular edema. My corrected vision was down to 0.6.
I investigated some of the possibilities of a cure for macular edema but it seemed to me that the only cure was surgery. Just when it seemed like there was no other option but surgery, I found Dr. Li's home page on the Internet. I called her on the telephone and told her the symptoms in detail. She said, "Please come, soon." I arrived in Hong Kong on November 29th and the first treatment began. The miracle drug for dry eye was used.
The results were really surprising!
The next day I felt the dry eye symptoms relax and the tearing recovered as the outer canthus was stung with a needle (acupuncture). When a recheck of the eyeground was done on the fifth day, Dr. Li said, with a smile, "It is great. The eye fundus is very clean. Your vision has recovered earlier than expected." The corrected vision was 1.0. I could read newspaper articles as long as I fixed my eyes on the characters. I had planned to go home on December 5th but ended up staying two more days to receive the extra treatments.
On December 10th I went to see the oculist again in Japan. My vision was still 1.0 when the doctor checked it. In addition to that test, she did an eyeground check and took photos. Although the macular edema still exists, the vision had truly increased and the eyeground had become clear so quickly. The oculist was very surprised. There were still symptoms such as, dark vision, smallish vision, and distorted vision. The complete recovery would take time. I have been doing physical therapy once a day and drinking the Chinese traditional medicine concocted by Dr. Li. I will also have photos taken of the eyeground once every two weeks and any progress or changes will be reported as they happen.

Dr. Li's comments
Without the use of the Chinese traditional medicine it would take six months to a year for the retina hemorrhage to gradually be absorbed. In this period such sequelae as the macular degeneration or the neovascularizational glaucoma could happen, which would make the vision recovery difficult. On the other hand, if the Chinese traditional medicine is used, not only could the hemorrhage be absorbed speedily but both the sequelae and complications could be treated and prevented. It can be concluded that to treat with Chinese traditional medicine would be better, either for a new hemorrhage or an old one. "Although there are a lot of people who get the eyeground hemorrhage in Japan, most of them do not seek treatment to correct it." Mr. T. has said. So he has told his story and has shown me the photos taken before and after the treatments. I would be happy to make these photos and his story available to other patients. This could be a valuable reference for them so that they could be aware of the help that is available. This would be a great help and support to me, also.

Regaining Sight After A Stroke

Mrs. Z, a 67 year old Hong Kong resident, had been completely blind for two months. Brain scan indicated a 5 mm subcortical lesion on the right side of her brain. Her left optic nerve was thickened. Both eyes had no reaction to light. Doctors had told her that she had little chance of recovery. Mrs. Z's son found our clinic online and, in desperation, he brought his mother to see Dr. Lee. After diagnosis, our impression was that although she was in good mental condition, Mrs. Z looked sluggish with poor nutrition. The patient had undergone two cataract surgeries and a thoracic operation. The patient complained that she could not eat more than two teaspoons of food. She would vomit if she ate more. Her face and tongue tilted to the right. Her tongue was light purple, and the pulse was weak with cold hands and feet. Her lower legs were swollen. Clinical observation indicated the optic nerves of both eyes were pallid. The right eye suffered macular degeneration due to high myopia. The patient told the doctor, "I only need very little light. It is so hard now." Her modest request was very touching. The patient had a very complicated situation that presented a big challenge to a Chinese doctor's skills. Doctor Lee started with Chinese medicine to help regain stomach strength first. At the same time, the doctor applied acupuncture and Chinese medicine iontophoresis (ion penetration). Gradually, the lips of the patient turned to red and other symptoms disappeared. Her general health improved. However, there was no improvement of her eyes at all. Mrs. Z and her family felt disappointed. On the 11th treatment, they asked, "Doctor, how much confidence do you have?" Dr. Lee felt reluctant to make a promise because neither Western medicine nor Chinese medicine can guarantee anything. However, electrophysiological examination (flash-VEP) indicated that the responses of the optic nerve of the patient's right eye had improved and were close to normal. Her left eye response were only about one third of normal. Her right eye should be close to regaining sight. Therefore, Dr. Lee made an exception and said, "I have 80% confidence. You must continue." Sure enough, after two more treatments, the patient began to see light with her right eye. After the third course of treatment (30 times), the right eye attained a visual acuity 2% of normal, enough for the patient to conduct her life routinely. This small step was no easy task. The success was partially due to modern medical techniques allowing recovery of the optic nerve, which encouraged Mrs. Z to continue the treatment.
